I have a Letz with an attached blower. It will run with a 2-3hp engine, but you have to watch your feed rate. I usually look at the drive pulley for a hint on the hp requirement. I believe Letz was made by John . I didn't pay too much for mine 7-8 years ago. Local demand and availability are the main factors for prices. Hope this helps. Ed

Recently, just for old times sake, I replaced the PTO shaft with a stub shaft and 10" wide by 24" diameter flat belt pulley. This unit can be detached in a few minutes and converted back to PTO drive. Now any flat belt power unit/tractor can drive the mill. An example of a 1947 G John as the drive unit.

It would be safe to direct drive this unit with a 10 or 15/16HP 3450rpm electric motor. Handier and cheaper to run per hour than a tractor.

1. Overhead drive. I have most all of the pieces to hang the main feeder shaft that will distribute power to everything, but I do need to fabricate the clutch jack-shafts for the grinder and work heads. I think everything I can either fabricate or repurpose, with the exception of the step pulley that drives the grinder head.

It's all that 6 M wants to run the mill even with a slow feed. Don't get me wrong, the 6 WILL do it, but the way it loads the 6, I would doubt that a 3 would have much luck. Even changing the pulley size to get the speed will not affect the HP. 3 hp on the driver is still 3 hp on the driven, it will just make it easier to stall the engine.
