You need 2 shafts of about 1 to 2" stock (big truck kingpins work nice) by about a foot long. Chuck one up in each chuck. Make a couple test plunges on each, the one in the headstock and the one in the tailstock, near the chuck and on the end of the pin hanging out, to the same nominal diameter.
